Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit by the numbers
As the clock struck two on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx, No. 2 got his second hit of the game and the 3,000th of his career, a 420-foot home run to left field. Derek Jeter is the 28th member of the 3,000-hit club, the first to do it pinstripes and the first to do it while playing for any New York baseball team.
Jeter is the fourth-youngest to reach the 3,000-hit milestone, behind Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron and Robin Yount, who all reached it before turning 37 years old. Jeter is the sixth player to accumulate 3,000 hits in his first 17 seasons, with Cobb, Aaron, Stan Musial, Pete Rose and Paul Waner also achieving the feat.
Jeter joins Wade Boggs as the only players to reach the milestone with a longball, and joins Craig Biggio in history as the only players to reach 3,000 hits during a five-hit game. Jeter is the first ever to reach 3,000 while getting five hits and no outs, as Biggio went 5-for-6 in his milestone game.
The home run was 237th of his career and the second-longest he's hit at the new Yankee Stadium. It was the first he's hit on a 3-2 pitch since Aug. 8, 2009 and the first he's hit that tied a game since July 22, 2010.
It was also his 20th homer vs the Tampa Bay Rays, his fourth-most vs any team, and the second he's hit off David Price. Coincidentally, the first homer ever allowed by Price was off the bat of Jeter, on Sept. 14, 2008. And that home run off Price also tied Jeter with Lou Gehrig for the most hits at the old Yankee Stadium.
Jeter now has 273 hits vs the Rays, 79 more than any other player, including 52 doubles and 195 singles, both of which are also the most against the Rays by any player.
Jeter's five-hit game is the third of his career, joining a list of 10 other Yankees with at least three five-hit games over the past 90 seasons. His last three-hit game was on June 21, 2005 -- also against the Rays.
All three of his five-hit games have included a homer, and he joins Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio as the only Yankees in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) to have three such games.
Jeter now has 3,003 hits, and is four shy of tying Al Kaline for 26th place on the all-time list.
