The Yankees called the Tampa Bay Rays about James Shields, according to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney, but were told he's currently "not available."

The Yankees have also been in on Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, and would love to add a top-of-the-line starter in his prime to their rotation, but so far haven't been able to consummate a deal.

The 29-year-old Shields boasts a 9-8 record with a minuscule 2.53 ERA.

According to baseball-reference.com Shields is slated to make $4.25 million in 2011. The Rays hold a $7 million team option for 2012 with a $2 million buyout. In 2013 it's a $9 million team option with a $1.5 million buyout, and in 2014 it's a $12 million team option with a $1 million buyout.
