What it means: That no team can lose 'em all, not even the Mariners, who had lost 17 straight and seemed perfectly content to make it 18 until the Yankees bullpen intervened and insisted they stop this foolishness immediately.
What's good: Define "good.'' Relatively speaking, Phil Hughes was good, working six innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits. But that's only if you weren't at the game. Pitching against the coldest, most dispirited team in baseball, Hughes only lasted as long as he did because he was pitching against the coldest, most dispirited team in baseball. Just about any other crew would have run him off the mound in the fifth inning. For the M's, Ichiro Suzuki shook off his lethargy to collect four hits and score two runs and Dustin Ackley had three hits, three RBI.
What's not so good: Just about everything else. Absolving the hitters, who were, after all, facing the defending AL Cy Young winner Felix Hernandez, the Yankees bullpen imploded in the seventh, with Cory Wade, Boone Logan and Luis Ayala -- with a big assist from Robbie Cano, who botched a DP flip -- conspiring to allow five runs (just one earned) to blow the game open despite the M's best efforts to keep it close. Curtis Granderson seemed to have his eye on something high in the sky in the ninth inning, but it wasn't the baseball, which dropped behind him for an embarrassing RBI double.
What's next: Off day Thursday, followed by a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles starting Friday night. After the game, Joe Girardi revealed his pitching rotation for the weekend, which had been a closely guarded secret: A.J. Burnett vs RHP Jeremy Guthrie (4-14, 3.33) on Friday; Bartolo Colon vs. TBA in the first game of Saturday's day-night doubleheader; TBA vs. LHP Zach Britton (6-7, 4.05) in the second game, and Freddy Garcia vs. RHP Jake Arrieta (9-7, 5.02) on Sunday. Psst: TBA in the second game Saturday stands for Ivan Nova.
