Logan: Love to have another lefty in the pen

Boone Logan needs a friend.

As the only lefty in the Yankees bullpen, Logan finds himself as the reliever Yankees manager Joe Girardi turns to in high-leverage spots against lefties late in games. With the trade deadline approaching, and the Yankees rumored to be looking at some southpaw relievers, Logan wouldn’t mind having a lefty counterpart with him in the pen.

“I’ve been spoiled being the only lefty,” Logan said Thursday at a HOPE Week event in Staten Island. “As long as I keep the late-inning role, I’d love to have another lefty down there."

When Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman created his bullpen this offseason, he envisioned having at least two lefties in the bullpen and possibly three as he signed Pedro Feliciano and reliever Damaso Marte is on the team and rehabbing an injury. Yet, with two months left in the season, it’s yet to be seen if the Yankees will even get one inning this season out of Feliciano and Marte due to their respective injuries.

Since watching his ERA rocket to 5.40 on May 7, Logan has pitched to a 2.37 ERA since and has allowed batters to hit just .205 against him, earning praise for his efforts from Cashman Thursday.

Still, Logan believes that having a southpaw to complement him down in the pen can help the team.

“It’s tough to have one lefty because you can’t just bring in a lefty in any lefty situation,” Logan said. “It’d be easier for Joe to manage if he had two lefties to work with.”
