WHAT IT MEANS: The Red Sox continue their domination of the Yankees. They took two of three from the Yankees and continue to beat up Mariano Rivera. Rivera has blown 14 career save opportunities to the Red Sox. The Orioles and Angels are tied for second, as Rivera has blown eight games against them.
WHAT IS GOOD: Freddy Garcia pitched five innings of one-run ball.
Brett Gardner went yard in the seventh to break up a 1-1 deadlock. It was Gardner's fifth of the year and his first in 156 at-bats. It was also the first homer he hit against Boston after 148 career at-bats.
What else? Well, Joe Girardi's decision to bench Jorge Posada looked good in the fifth. Girardi put Posada on the bench in part so he could play Eduardo Nunez at third. Nunez tied the game at one in the fifth with a solo homer.
Garcia did some fine tap dancing in the second. After he loaded the bases with no outs, Garcia kept the Sawx to just one run.
In the sixth, Cory Wade had another impressive inning.
In the seventh, So-Ro-Mo began. Rafael Soriano looked excellent again, putting down the side. Since coming off the DL, he has faced 12 batters and retired all of them. David Robertson let a runner advance to third, but no further.
WHAT'S BAD: Phil Hughes came in during the 10th and quickly lost the game, allowing a double to David Ortiz and a game-winning single to Josh Reddick.
In the ninth, Mariano Rivera made it messy.
Trying to protect a one-run lead, Marco Scutaro led off the inning with a double high off the green monster. After a sac bunt, Dustin Pedroia hit a sac fly.
In the fourth, Nick Swisher gave a ball a ride, but it found the nook in right center field and it allowed Jacoby Ellsbury to range in front of the 420 sign and make the catch.
In the sixth, with two men on, Eric Chavez, with a chance to give the Yankees a lead, struck out looking. As Gay Talese said, "Posada could have done just as well." (I sat next to Talese the whole series. He is writing a story on Girardi for the New Yorker. That is something to look forward to reading.)
GOOD NIGHT & GOOD MORNING: This was the longest Yanks-Sawx game of the year. Time of the game was 4:15.
COMING ATTRACTIONS: Wally Matthews is going to write a column. I'm going to host a special edition of Bombers Beat with ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes. Wally will join us, too. Show will be up in the morning. Wally already chimed in on the Posada benching. Here is my news story on Girardi's reasoning.
WHAT IS NEXT:The Yankees are off on Monday before a six-game homestand against the Angels and the Rays. If Joe Girardi keeps the rotation how he had it planned, then we'll see Phil Hughes (2-3, 6.93) vs. Dan Haren (12-6, 2.81) on Tuesday. On Wednesday A.J. Burnett (8-9, 4.54) faces TBA. On Thursday, TBA pitches for the Yankees against Ervin Santana (7-8, 3.32). To Be Announced will be changed to people at some point.
QUESTION OF THE NIGHT: What did you think of Girardi's decision to bring in Hughes?

Classic A-Rod would get an inordinate amount of blame because of failure at end of games when he was big reason the moment was possible.

Very A-Rodish game by Carmelo: He was great enough to put himself in position to fail in the fourth.
