After making it through pre-game workouts on Saturday without incident, Alex Rodriguez was inserted into the Yankees' lineup. He had missed six straight games and eight of the last 11 due to a sprained left thumb.
Mark Teixeira, however, is out.
Teixeira said before Saturday’s game against the Blue Jays that his bruised right knee was “feeling a little better.” But apparently, it’s not to the point where he can play.
Teixeira suffered the bruise after being drilled by Red Sox reliever Alfredo Aceves on Thursday night. Teixeira did not play on Friday.
Jesus Montero, who made his Major League debut Thursday, will play his second game today. He is slated to serve as the Yankees' DH.
Nick Swisher will get the start at first base in Teixeira’s absence.
Along with Swisher, Girardi's lineup included 2B Robinson Cano, RF Andruw Jones, C Francisco Cervelli, CF Curtis Granderson and LF Brett Gardner.
Girardi also touched on moving from a six-man rotation to a five-man rotation on Saturday.
While he has still not made up his mind as to who will be removed, Girardi did say the decision will come down after Freddy Garcia starts on Monday versus Baltimore.
“The decision does not have to be permanent,” said Girardi, noting he just wants to get his pitcher son regular rest.
