Joe Girardi decided to give Alex Rodriguez a night at designated hitter on Tuesday because he's played in the field for the last three games.
Rodriguez had knee surgery earlier this season and is dealing with a sprained left thumb, so the manager did not want to play him in the field for a fourth straight game.
JOE ON AJ, DAY TWO: Girardi was asked on Tuesday about A.J. Burnett appearing to mock the manager's decision to remove him in the fifth on Monday.
After his start, Burnett said, ""Heaven forbid I give up a couple of hits. You do what you can to get your team the (win), I guess."
Girardi defended his decision, saying, correctly, that Burnett had run out of gas after the third.
"I thought his stuff had clearly changed so that's why I pulled him," the manager said of Burnett, who has two wins in his last 14 starts.
