Phil Hughes called his season a 'disaster' days before the playoffs. He now has a chance to rewrite the script.
Hughes replaced Ivan Nova to start the third inning of Game 5 with the Yankees down, 2-0.
Nova was very hittable in his two innings. He gave up two runs on back-to-back homers to Don Kelly and Delmon Young in the first.
He also allowed a leadoff double to Magglio Ordonez along with a couple loud outs. He struck out three and walked none. He tossed 24 strikes on 31 pitches, but too often they caught too much of the plate.
Hughes struggled with his velocity early in the season, spent nearly three months on the DL due to a shoulder injury and then was scratched from an early September start due to back spasms.
He made the postseason roster as a reliever.
