The Yankees have invited Russell Branyan to spring training, the team confirmed.

It is hard to imagine Branyan makes the team unless Eric Chavez doesn't sign. Even then, it seems doubtful

Even without Chavez, Branyan would have to beat out Bill Hall, Brandon Laird and Ramiro Pena. Not impossible, but Branyan only hit .197 with five homers and 14 RBIs last year. He has hit for power in the past, knocking 56 homers combined in 2009 and '10.

As far as the DH spot, he seems like a longshot. But he could be a backup plan. Branyan has hit eight homers in 47 at-bats at Yankee Stadium.

The New York Post first mentioned the signing.
