First Pitch: Now batting for the Yankees . . .

Derek Jeter, who will address the assembled media this morning at 9:45 on the day the Yankees regulas arrive at camp. Having listened to enough Jeter news conferences over the past 15 years, I can confidently predict he won't say anything that will wind up on anyone's back page. Or home page, for those of us who write for the interwebs.

But obviously, this will be a different State of the Jeter address than last year's, since this year, there is no pursuit of 3,000 hits to look ahead to and no subpar 2010 to look back on. In fact, the only pressure on Jeter this season is the pressure of turning 38 in June, which will bring another round of questions if he gets off to a slow start.

And of course, Jeter will be asked again about Mariano Rivera, who waved a fish in front of all our noses the other day but pulled it back before we got what we wanted, which was a definitive answer on his future beyond this season. Mo said he only told his family; when informed that Jeter said he, too, knew Mo's plans, Mo said, "Well, he's family.'' We'll try our best to get Jeter to spill some family secrets.

ON-DECK CIRCLE: The Yankees are opening the clubhouse an hour earlier today, 8:10 a.m., because the regulars will be in to take their physicals, and Andrew and I will be there, and filling up the blog all day long. So check back early and often.

IN THE HOLE: Alex Rodriguez' turn at the podium comes Saturday morning at 9:45 a.m., followed by the first full squad workout of the spring. As always, Marchand and I will be all over it.

QUESTION(S) OF THE DAY: I wrote a column today on Phil Hughes' battle to stay in the starting rotation. You can read it here, then think about these questions: Where do you think Hughes starts the season? In the rotation? In the bullpen? In another uniform?
