This is the first in what will be a recurring feature of the blog, in which we examine the everyday wit and wisdom of Alex Rodriguez.

Asked Saturday what prompted him to travel to Germany to undergo an unorthodox treatment known as Orthokine therapy, Alex Rodriguez said this: "Just a simple dinner with Kobe – Kobe Bryant, from the Lakers.''

This is a double-barreled Al B. Al.

The first part is classic name-dropping: "I'm on a first-name basis with a famous basketball player. We even have dinner together.'' The second, a classic passive-aggressive putdown: "You guys might not know who I'm talking about, so I'll spell it out for you.''

Either way, the meaning is the same: I'm Alex Rodriguez. And you're not.
