Girardi noncomittal on Pineda

3/30/2012

Joe Girardi delivered a less-than-ringing endorsement of Michael Pineda's chances of remaining on the big-league roster when interviewed on the YES Network telecast of tonight's Yankees-Phillies game.

Asked what was next for Pineda, who was shelled for six runs and seven hits in 2-2/3 innings, the manager would not committ to another start this spring, even though his turn to pitch will come up again Wednesday, when the Yankees play their final pre-season game against the Mets at The Boss. Freddy Garcia, Pineda's main competition for the final spot in the rotation who pitched well in a minor-league game this afternoon, is already scheduled to pitch part of that game.

"I've said all along we have to make some decisions here and we have to make them in a hurry,'' he said. "So we'll have to see what we do next.''

And asked to assess Pineda's performance, in which he appeared to struggle with his mechanics and his control, needing 71 pitches to get eight outs, Girardi said, "He was just really off tonight.''

More to come when we speak with the manager after the game.
