This morning, Andrew Marchand wrote an item documenting the players Derek Jeter is likely to pass on the all-time hits list this year, and it is an impressive one.
ESPN Insider Eric Seidman looks a little deeper into the Sabermetric side of Jeter's hot 2012 start, which has him hitting .382 so far, and on a similar HR pace to his 1999 season, when he hit a career-high 24.
And now it is your turn: Barring catastrophic injury, there doesn't seem to be any reason why Jeter shouldn't finish at least in the top 10 of baseball's all-time hits leaders. (He only needs 202 more hits to pass Eddie Collins to move into 10th place.)
But why should he stop there? With the rest of this season and two more to go on his current contract, a top 5 finish is certainly within reach -- Jeter would need 401 hits to move ahead of Tris Speaker, No. 5 -- but there is also the chance that he could crack the top three, or even pass the 4,000-hits barrier.
I'm thinking he tops out at about 3,560 hits, which would leave Jeter behind Stan Musial, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb and Pete Rose, pretty good company indeed.
But where do you think Jeter finishes up? Can he challenge Rose and end his career as baseball's all-time hit king? Let us know.
