Eric Chavez was placed on the seven-day disabled list today with a concussion and a whiplash injury suffered diving for a ball in the fifth inning of Wednesday night's game against the Orioles in New York, and Jayson Nix, an infielder by trade, was recalled from AAA Scranton to take his place on the roster. Nix was immediatelly placed into the starting lineup for tonight's game against the Royals -- in left field, a position he has played all of six times in his major-league life

"I don't have a whole lot of games of experience,'' Nix said in the clubhouse before the game. "But every time I've been out there I've been comfortable and had no problems.''

Joe Girardi
said the 29-year-old Nix, who played second base for Scranton Wednesday night, was given the callup over more established outfielders for several reasons. Nix is a right-handed hitter and the Roylas are starting left-handers tonight and tomorrow. Chris Dickerson, Colin Curtis and DeWayne Wise, all outfielders for Scranton, are all left-handed hitters. And Cole Garner, the only right-handed hitting outfielder on the SWB roster, just came off the disabled list.

Plus, the Great Experiment, starring Eduardo Nunez as the fill-in leftfielder while Brett Gardner is on the DL with a bone bruise on his right elbow, crashed and burned on Tuesday night against the Orioles.

"Nixie’s played all over the place'' Girardi said. "We think he can handle this.''

Nix is a .207 career hitter in parts of four major league seasons with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays. He was hitting .233 with no home runs and 4 RBI for Scranton.
