TORONTO -- We just spoke to Joe Girardi. Here are the notes:

* Derek Jeter is getting his first day off of the year because the Yankees are playing 16 games in a row. Jeter will likely have a DH day when the Yankees get back to New York. The Yankees first play Cincy for three, beginning Friday in the Bronx. Next week, they have three with the Royals. Girardi hinted Jeter will DH against KC.

* Curtis Granderson is leading off because he "has done it before." I peppered Girardi with questions about why he doesn't bat Granderson in the No. 3 or 4 spot. Girardi said he hasn't thought of doing that.

Girardi said he likes to split up his lefty and righty hitters. I pointed out that Granderson and Robinson Cano have hit just as well against lefties and righties in recent years. Still, Girardi didn't budge.

He also said that he has about five guys who could be in those traditional power spots in the order. This is true, but I'm still wondering how many homers Granderson has to hit before he is batting third or fourth.

I think a better answer to batting Granderson leadoff or second is that Girardi wants to get him up as much as he can.

* Ivan Nova ran on his ankle. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen on Thursday in anticipation of starting on Saturday. Girardi said even if he doesn't throw the bullpen, he could still start on Saturday.

* Brett Lawrie was suspended four games after throwing his helmet and hitting an umpire. He is appealing and will play against the Yankees.

* A Toronto reporter asked Girardi about if the Blue Jays may be cockier than they should be. Girardi passed on commenting.
