Brad Mills/US PresswireMark Teixeira had the game-winning hit in the 14th inning against the Nationals on Saturday. Its official, the Yankees CAN win a game without hitting a home run, beating the Nationals 5-3 in 14 innings on Saturday without a single Yankee hitting a ball over the fence. Prior to the game, the Yankees were 0-12 when not going yard, the longest such streak to start a season in franchise history.
Mark Teixeira had the game-winning double in the top of the 14th inning. He joins Chris Chambliss (1977) and Tino Martinez (1996) as the only Yankees first baseman with a go-ahead hit in the 14th inning or later since 1960.
Bryce Harper had arguably the worst day of his career, becoming the first teenager in major-league history with at least five strikeouts in a game. Yankees pitchers threw him 19 sliders, the most seen by any player this season, and got him out five times with the pitch.
KEEP 'EM IN THE PARK, PART II
The Yankees opened the series with a win thanks to another quality outing from Phil Hughes, who tossed six innings of one-run ball Friday. Hughes didn't allow a homer in a start for the first time this season, falling two starts shy of the Yankees record.
Hughes generated a career-best 22 swings-and-misses, including 18 with his fastball. He threw just 24 curveballs, but 17 were in the lower third of the zone, and the Nationals were 0-for-7 in at-bats ending in hook to that location.
THREE SWEEPS A CHARM
The Yankees finished off their third consecutive sweep with a 4-1 win Sunday. Ivan Nova pitched brilliantly again, allowing just one run in 7⅔ innings, as he improved to 12-0 in his last 15 road starts dating to last June.
Nova went to his hook often, throwing a season-high 33 curveballs. The Nationals went 1-for-7 in at-bats ending in a curve, and opponents now have four hits and nine strikeouts in 20 at-bats ending in a curve over Nova's last five starts.
BRONX BOMBER YANKEEMETRIC OF SERIES
Curtis Granderson hit his 20th home run Friday in the team's 63rd game. It’s the second consecutive season he's reached 20 homers in 63 team games or fewer. Only four other Yankees have hit 20 longballs that quickly in two or more seasons: Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Lou Gehrig.
VINTAGE YANKEEMETRIC OF SERIES
After the Yankees went through the order once in Saturday's game, Andy Pettitte and Raul Ibañez joined an exclusive Yankees club.
They became the first set of Yankee teammates aged 40 or older to start and have at least one plate appearance in the same game since 1958, when Enos Slaughterr started in right field and Murry Dickson was the starting pitcher for two games in September.
RIDICULOUS YANKEEMETRIC OF SERIES
The game on Friday pitted the first-place Yankees against the first-place Nationals, both of who entered the game on six-game win streaks.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this was the third matchup in major-league history between first-place teams that had each won their previous six or more games. The other games were on May 7, 1976, between the Dodgers and Phillies, and May 1, 1985, between the Blue Jays and Angels.

Classic A-Rod would get an inordinate amount of blame because of failure at end of games when he was big reason the moment was possible.

Very A-Rodish game by Carmelo: He was great enough to put himself in position to fail in the fourth.
