On a night of missed opportunities, the one that Russell Martin missed in the eighth inning doesn't rank particularly high, and yet, it was somewhat memorable. There was one out and a runner on first -- Andruw Jones, pinch-hitting for Eric Chavez, had been hit by a pitch -- when Martin shattered his bat on a grounder to shortstop that turned into an easy 6-4-3 double play.

Afterward, Martin was jokingly asked if he should just blame the manufacturer of the bat for his missed chance. "No, I'm not going to do that,'' he said. "They make good wood.''

Then he added this rather unique observation: "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian.''

Like most of his teammates last night, Martin was shooting blanks.
