• For a guy who's been in the background all season, Dewayne Wise has now been front and center two nights in a row. And for a guy who made one of the most important catches in baseball history -- the juggling circus catch that robbed Gabe Kapler of a home run and saved Mark Buerhle's perfect game in 2009 when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox -- Wise got as much attention tonight for a catch he admittedly did not make.

"Best catch I ever made,'' Wise said, only half jokingly. The veteran outfielder was quite candid about not even coming close to catching the ball -- actually, what else could he be, since the replay doesn't lie? -- and just as candid about his desire to make off with his ill-gotten goods as quickly as possible.

"He made the call right away and I’m not going to argue with him,'' Wise said of 3B umpire Mike DiMuro. It was a tough angle for him. Stuff like that happens. They're not perfect. What am I supposed to do? Run back out to left field? I ran off the field.''

A couple of innings later, Wise said, he flipped a ball into the stands toward the fan who had tried to stuff the ball into his glove to make it appear he had made the catch. Why did he wait so long? "Well, they already had one,'' he said.

• In his third straight start while Russell Martin nurses a stiff lower back, Chris Stewart had two singles and two RBIs, and a curious moment in the second inning when he twice attempted to bunt with runners on first and third and two out. Luckily, he couldn't execute it and wound up singling in Nick Swisher with the Yankees' first run of the night. Stewart is hitting .258 overall and .323 at home (10-for-31).

• Birthday boy Derek Jeter not only picked up two infield singles to raise his average on his birthday to .329 (16-49), he is also now one hit shy of tying his boyhood idol, Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th place on baseball's all-time hits list with 3,184.
