Mark Teixeira said he and Joe Girardi had discussed the best day to give the first baseman a day off and both agreed that today was the day. "You worry about guys getting run down, and we have a doubleheader coming up (Saturday in Boston), as well,'' Girardi said. "I just figured get him off the turf one day.'' Both said it had nothing to do with Teixeira's seventh-inning error Monday night that cost the Yankees the game. “He’s so good at what he does over there, but just like our bullpen, he’s not going to be perfect,'' Girardi said. "This was a planned day off for him. It’s probably good for him.”

CC Sabathia, on the DL with a groin strain, played some catch in the outfield before tonight's game, apparently without incident, and will throw his first bullpen since the injury one day this weekend in Boston, perhaps Friday. Girardi said he is still optimistic that Sabathia will rejoin the rotation after the All-Star break.

Pedro Feliciano, who was not expected to ever throw a pitch for the Yankees after suffering a torn rotator cuff during spring training 2011, threw a bullpen session at The Trop today for Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild and, according to the manager, "His ball was moving all over the place. It was good to see. He’s encouraged and I’m encouraged.”

Feliciano has been throwing bullpens every three days, so far without incident, and Girardi now says he thinks it is possible the 35-year-old lefty could pitch for the Yankees this season. "He had such a serious injury, we weren’t sure what was going to happen. But if we thought he was done, we wouldn’t have brought him to spring training.”

Eduardo Nunez, who played just four games for Triple-A Scranton before going on the disabled list with a thumb injury, is scheduled to take batting practice this week but is still a couple of weeks from returning to action.
