First Pitch: Clutch 42

On May 21, the Yankees were 21-21. They were 42 games into their season, and there were questions about this team. When they were hitting, they weren't pitching. When they pitched, they didn't hit. Their starting pitching was suspect. Their offense was too old and one-dimensional, with its all-or-nothing attributes.

But now the Yankees have played 42 more games, and most of those questions have vanished.

Over the past 42 games, the Yankees are 30-12, and have made any concerns look a little silly in hindsight. Things can change quickly in a baseball season, but who would you rather be than the Yankees right now?

They have baseball's best record, and look as if they may run away with the AL East.

Their biggest concerns are probably the third baseman (Alex Rodriguez), who looks more old than like his old self, and the catcher (Russell Martin), who has struggled at the plate. But as Joe Girardi pointed out on Saturday, Martin has struggled on offense but the Yankees are still on pace to win 98 games.

So the Yanks are about to finish up a first half in which Mariano Rivera was lost for the season, Brett Gardner played nine games, and Joba Chamberlain pitched in zero. Guys like CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and David Robertson all landed on the disabled list. Still, the Yankees are sitting pretty.

UP NOW: My column that says the McDonald's-eating Yankees need to stay hungry.

ON DECK: Ivan Nova (9-3, 4.05) faces Jon Lester (5-5, 4.33) on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball."

IN THE HOLE: Mark Simon and Katie Sharp will have a What2Watch4 at 10:30 a.m.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Do the Yankees have any worries right now?
