If Ichiro Suzuki plays in tonight's game between the Yankees and Mariners at Safeco Field, it will not be for the home team.

A Yankees source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com a report originally tweeted by Jack Curry of the YES Network that the Yankees are in the process of acquiring Ichiro, the 38-year-old right fielder who had played all 12 of his previous MLB seasons with Seattle.

Ichiro is a career .322 hitter with 2,533 hits in the U.S., but is having one of his worst seasons offensively, batting .261 with a .288 on-base percentage.

According to Curry, the Yankees will receive Ichiro in exchange for right-handed pitchers D. J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. With Brett Gardner likely to miss the remainder of the season with an elbow injury, it was expected that the Yankees would try to acquire an outfielder at the trade deadline. But Ichiro has played mostly right field for the Mariners, raising the question of whether Nick Swisher, the everyday right fielder who is sidelined with a hip flexor injury, may be injured worse than the Yankees have indicated.
