For weeks now, Joe Girardi has said he needs to get CC Sabathia and Russell Martin back together in preparation for postseason play, when Martin is expected to catch every day.
But even though his lineup against the Red Sox today includes Martin, Chris Stewart will be behind the plate for the 15th straight time with Sabathia starting. The Yankees ace has not thrown to the Yankees everyday catcher since April 11.
"At some point, I want to do it, but I can’t tell you when I'm gonna do it,'' Girardi said of reuniting Sabathia and Martin. "But it’s seemed to work out, it seems to keep them both fresh and I think Russell has swung the bat better since coming back in the second half and maybe some of that has to do with not playing him day games after night games.''
The manager did concede, however, that it would not work out to delay putting his No. 1 battery back together before the playoffs begin.
"If you throw him back there and he hasn’t caught him, yes ... I guess it is an issue,'' Girardi said. "You want to make sure both of them are comfortable, not just the pitcher. You want the catcher to be comfortable, too, that he has a sense that he knows what CC wants to throw and they’re on the same page. I think that’s really important.''
Just not important enough to do today.

Very A-Rodish game by Carmelo: He was great enough to put himself in position to fail in the fourth.
