WHAT IT MEANS: Curtis Granderson had a rough day Saturday and ruined what would have been some more sweet revenge for Mark Teixeira on Vicente Padilla.
GRAND SLIP: In the ninth with the game tied, Pedro Ciriaco hit a fly ball to center that Granderson turned into a mystery, twisting and turning on a ball that was called a triple but really was a major error on the center fielder. Rafael Soriano took the loss, but the blame belongs squarely on the shoulders of the Yankees center fielder.
TEX WITH A MAJOR MESSAGE: Teixeira again got revenge on Padilla, who famously said Teixeira should play a "women's sport." Tex nailed an eighth-inning, game-tying, two-run homer off Padilla.
After nailing his shot, Teixeira lingered at the plate as if he were Reggie Jackson in 1977. It was a signature moment for Teixeira, who now has gotten back at Padilla twice in the past month. The two have a long history of going back and forth. This month, Teixiera has owned Padilla.
RAIN DELAY: On Friday, the Yankees and Red Sox played a 2-hour, 41-minute game. On Saturday, they had a 2-hour, 4-minute rain delay.
DELAYED START FOR CC NEVER GETS STARTED: I tend to doubt CC Sabathia will use it as an excuse, but after the long rain delay, he had trouble revving up against the Red Sox, who scored three runs on four hits in the first. The big shots were RBI doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks brought in two runners.
In the fifth, Gonzalez capped off two-out trouble for Sabathia by hitting a three-run bomb. It was another bad start against the Red Sox for Sabathia, whose day/night ended after six innings of six-run, eight-hit ball. He struck out six and walked two.
Remember, last year, Sabathia became the first pitcher to lose four starts against the Red Sox since Rodrigo Lopez in 2006.
TOO MANY HOME RUNS: Chris Stewart, "not Sabathia's personal catcher," hit his first home run as a Yankee in the third to cut the lead to 3-1. It was the Yankees' 157th in 100 games, which is their best home run start, over the 1961 club. If memory serves correctly, the Yankees had a couple of good home run hitters on that team.
NEW YORK NIX: In the fifth, Jayson Nix hit a two-run job. Nix, with his go-ahead, three-run double Wednesday and his work Saturday, is trying to make it hard for Brian Cashman to think there is a better right-handed-hitting third baseman he could find in a trade.
Nix likes facing Jon Lester. It was his third homer in 16 at-bats against the Red Sox lefty.
ON DECK: Mike Mazzeo and I will handle the blog, while Wally Matthews will deliver a column.
QUESTION OF THE NIGHT: What do you think of CC so far?
