Notes: McGehee makes Yankees debut

Casey McGehee said he was "in a fog" during his Yankees debut on Wednesday.

But those words shouldn't leave Bombers fans worried about the team's newest acquisition.

McGehee, obtained from Pittsburgh in a trade for Chad Qualls on Tuesday, arrived in New York around 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning, so he didn't have much time to sleep before the Wednesday afternoon game against Baltimore.

But things turned out just fine for McGehee, who went 0-for-2 with two walks, a sac fly and two runs scored in the Yanks' 12-3 win.

McGehee played first base in place of the injured Mark Teixeira (wrist) on Wednesday. He will serve as a fill-in at first and third, particularly for the injured Alex Rodriguez. (Teixeira could be back as early as this weekend.)

McGehee also gives Joe Girardi a right-handed bat at a time when righties are scarce in the Yankees' lineup.

The three-year veteran said all the right things on Wednesday, about wanting to help the Yankees win and taking on whatever role he's asked to perform.

"You're trying to put a ring on your finger, which is something that I haven't had a chance to do," McGehee said. "That's the reason why we all play."

GOOD DAY FOR RISP: The Yankees went 7-for-13 with runners in scoring position on Wednesday, a great day for a club that has struggled to produce in such situations for most of the year.

Nick Swisher seemed happy with the team's production, but also reminded reporters that the club is built for the long ball -- something that's just fine with him.

"This team is designed to hit home runs. If there's a runner on first base, a two-run bomb is actually more (productive) than getting a base hit," Swisher said.

Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano homered for the Yanks on Wednesday, who have at least one home run in 20 straight home games (the second-longest streak in franchise history).

Cano hit the Yankees' major-League leading eighth grand slam of the season. The Yanks are two grand slams shy of tying their franchise high of 10, reached in 2011, 2010 and 1987.

JETER METER: Derek Jeter went 3-for-4, his second straight three-hit game. He has 12 games of three or more hits this year.
