Bob DeChiara/US PresswireFreddy Garcia has a 3.69 ERA in nine starts since the beginning of July.Garcia has become one of the most consistent starters in the Yankees' rotation the past two months, with three runs allowed in eight of his nine starts since the beginning of July, pitching to a 3.69 ERA in that span.
He has won his last three starts, giving up two runs in each outing. The only time in his career he’s had a longer win streak allowing two runs or fewer in each start was a four-game streak in 2002.
Garcia has dominated righties during this three-start stretch, holding them to four singles in 31 at-bats (.129). In his six July starts, righties hit .258 against him with six extra-base hits, including two homers.
He has also gotten a lot better results on pitches out of the strike zones in August. Batters are chasing fewer pitches in his last three starts but making less contact on those pitches.
They have just one hit in 18 at-bats (.056) ending in an out-of-zone pitch, while missing on nearly half their swings in August. In his six July starts, opponents hit .267 with nearly a quarter of the balls in play turning into line drives.
Garcia returns to the South Side for the first time as a visitor since 2008. He hasn't beaten his former team since May 2003, as a member of the Seattle Mariners, and is 0-2 with an 8.16 ERA in his last three starts against them.
Matchups to Watch
Kevin Youkilis is 3-for-17 (.176) against Garcia. That's the fifth-lowest batting average by any active right-hander against Garcia (min. 20 PA). Youkilis is 0-for-5 with a walk in his last six plate appearances versus Garcia since hitting a home run against him on May 15 last year.
Adam Dunn is hitless in 11 at-bats with six strikeouts against Garcia. Of the five balls in play by Dunn, only one has left the infield. The 0-for-11 mark is tied with Fred McGriff for the second-most hitless at-bats against Garcia. The only player with more is Mark Teixeira (16).
Raul Ibanez is 5-for-11 (.455) against Gavin Floyd, and three of those hits have been homers. The only player with more homers versus Floyd is Jason Kubel, with four in 38 at-bats.
Teixeira is 1-for-11 (.091) with five strikeouts versus Floyd. That one hit came in 2008, so Teixeira is hitless in eight at-bats against Floyd since joining the Yankees. That matches his most hitless at-bats against any pitcher while in pinstripes. He is also 0-for-8 against Craig Breslow.
Going Streakin'
The Yankees have won six straight road games against the White Sox, their longest win streak in the Windy City since winning six in a row from 1977-78. A win tonight would match their fourth-longest road win streak against the Pale Hose in the Live Ball Era. The longest is a 10-game streak in 1931.
