Alex Rodriguez was encouraged with the results of an X-ray on Sunday, saying he remains on schedule for a September return.

Rodriguez will undergo another X-ray later this week.

"The plan is to start some strengthening exercises for the wrist and hand ... and go from there," Rodriguez said. "I think everything is as scheduled."

If Rodriguez's next X-ray goes well, he might be cleared to swing a bat.

Currently, Rodriguez's regimen includes taking one-handed swings, throwing a football and working out on a bike. On Sunday night, he did light fielding drills.

He said he has been going through extensive conditioning drills and feels that he will be in game shape upon his return.

The Yankees' third baseman has been out since July 25 with a broken left hand.

Rodriguez was batting .276 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs at the time of his injury. In his absence, replacements Eric Chavez, Jayson Nix and Casey McGehee have combined to go 27-for-79 (.341) with seven homers.
