Joe Girardi has decided to shuffle his rotation for this weekend's series against the Orioles.
Originally, Freddy Garcia was slated to start Saturday, and David Phelps was going to go Sunday. Now Phelps will start Saturday, and Phil Hughes will take the mound Sunday.
CC Sabathia will start the series opener in Tampa on Monday, and Garcia will go Tuesday against the Rays.
Hughes has solid numbers at home, so that may be why Girardi decided to move him up. The manager wouldn't delve into specifics.
"There's not one exact reason," Girardi said. "We just decided to go that way."
TEX OUT UNTIL THURSDAY, AT EARLIEST: Girardi said Mark Teixeira (calf) will not return during the Yankees' three-game series against Tampa Bay next week. The earliest he could return is during their next series in Baltimore, which starts Thursday.
Girardi said Teixeira "feels better" but is not doing any baseball activities yet, just receiving treatment.
The Yankees have said that Teixeira, who initially suffered the injury on Monday against Toronto, will be out at least a week, possibly two.
IVAN THROWS AGAIN: For the second straight day, Ivan Nova threw off flat ground. He said he feels no pain in his injured right shoulder and hasn't felt any since Thursday.
Nova was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 23 with inflammation in his right rotator cuff.
“I’m getting better. I was getting crazy. I’ve been in here doing nothing. I want to do all my stuff," he said. "I want to throw, I want to pitch. After I threw yesterday for the first time, I was so happy."
Girardi said team doctors will map out a rehab schedule for Nova, which will likely include throwing off a mound and a bullpen session, before he takes the mound in a game again.
Nova still hopes to return from the disabled list once he is eligible on Sept. 7.
