Debby Wong/US PresswireRafael Soriano saved both games on Wednesday in the Bronx. When Joe Girardi called to the bullpen around the sixth inning of a 1-1 game, Soriano started to loosen up. By the time the eighth inning rolled around, and the Yankees took a 2-1 lead, Soriano was ready to go.
"He cranked it up (in the bullpen) and he said he felt good," the manager said. "And it showed."
It certainly did. Soriano tossed a scoreless ninth to seal the Yankees' doubleheader sweep of the Blue Jays.
The Yanks have won four straight -- and Soriano has saved every one of them. He has an eye-popping 42 saves since taking over the closer's role for the injured Mariano Rivera on May 10.
PHELPS PHEELIN' PHINE: David Phelps tossed a career-high 110 pitches on Wednesday night and tied a career high for innings pitched, with 6 2/3. And that's exactly what Girardi was looking for from the rookie.
"That was extremely important for us," the manager said.
Here's why: the Yanks used six relievers in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. So they needed some length from Phelps in the nightcap.
"I'm starting to expect that from him," Nick Swisher said after Phelps struck out six Jays.
The righty is undefeated in his past five starts and has combined to limit opponents to two earned runs combined over his last two outings (12.1 IP).
K-ROD: Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-7 with five strikeouts in the doubleheader. He was booed lustily after striking out to end the seventh inning of the nightcap.
