How’s this for irony?

On Saturday, Eduardo Nunez won a game on an error. On Sunday, the struggling shortstop contributed to a loss by making a pair.

“Nuneeeeeeeeee” committed a throwing error in the sixth inning and a fielding error in the seventh inning, and now has nine miscues this season.

“Mistakes happen,” Nunez said after the Yankees' 5-4 loss. “I just have to keep my head up. I had a bad game.”

Nunez also went 0-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and struck out with the tying run aboard at second in the eighth. But it was his struggles in the field that stuck out, just as they have the past two seasons.

“It happens,” manager Joe Girardi said. “He did a good job of getting to the one ball to his left and he threw it away (in the sixth). And the other one, he probably just rushed it a little bit knowing that (Yeonis) Cespedes runs hard. But for the most part he’s done a good job out there.”

Nunez was sent down to the minors because of his subpar fielding. But it’s carried over since his recall.

“It’s bad. I have to play defense. I have to make the plays. I have to do it,” he said. “It happens. Everybody has bad days. You have to keep playing hard.

“I have to keep working and getting better to play at this level.”

Nunez continues to see time at short since Derek Jeter is still bothered by an ankle injury.

“I can’t tell you,” Girardi replied, when asked whether Jeter could become the everyday shortstop again before the playoffs. “As we’ve seen, it can just be one incident running that bothers him, so it’s really hard to predict.”

Still, Girardi stood behind Nunez.

“I like what the kid does,” Girardi said. “He gives us some excitement out there, and we’ll decide as we move forward. Hopefully as Jete’s ankle continues to heal he can get out there more too.”
