• Alex Rodriguez's bruised left foot improved enough from yesterday that Joe Girardi inserted him into his lineup as the DH tonight, batting third. A-Rod fouled a ball off his foot in his final at-bat of Tuesday night's loss to the Twins and did not play yesterday. Rodriguez said the swelling had gone down enough to allow him to hit tonight, but not play the field; Girardi said it was not out of the question that Rodriguez could be back at third base tomorrow.
• Mark Teixeira had seven at-bats and played one inning in the field in a simulated game this afternoon in Tampa, and according to Girardi felt "pretty good." It seems unlikely, however, that Teixeira will return to the Yankees before they return home for the final series of the season, three games against the Red Sox beginning Monday night in the Bronx. Girardi said Teixeira was likely to take Friday off and play in another sim game on Saturday, making it a remote possibility that the Yankees would fly him to Toronto for the series finale here on Sunday, assuming all goes well.
"To me the biggest test is running the bases," Girardi said. "You’d like to see that happen. You’d like to know that he’s 100 percent when you put him back out there. But I don’t really know until you can get into an intense situation."
