NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Yankees' hopes to replace Alex Rodriguez with a platoon of Eric Chavez and Jeff Keppinger appear over, as they both have reportedly proved too rich for the Yankees' frugal blood.

“When we talked about a platoon situation, those were two names we talked about,” Joe Girardi said on Wednesday.

Chavez has agreed to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for one year and $3 million, while Kepinger is headed to the Chicago White Sox for three years and $12 million, according to reports.

The Yankees could turn to Kevin Youkilis on the free-agent market, but Youkilis may be asking for more money than the $189 million-or-bust Yankees can offer. Plus, there are serious questions if Youkilis’ bad back will allow him to play the position consistently.

In 2012, Chavez had a .908 OPS and stayed healthy for the first time since 2006, appearing in 113 games.

“He is a name that we talked about,” Girardi said. “He has had success for us; especially against right-handers. You have to be thinking about what do you do next.”

As it stands now, Girardi said that this season could be different because the Yankees may not have a set lineup.

“I know that we are not done,” Girardi said. “I don’t know who we are going to have at the end of the day. You can have a wish list, but sometimes it is just not a match. It is not necessarily on your end. It can be on the other end. You can’t get too caught up on that. But I know we have work to do.”

Girardi said the Yankees may look at the trade market to improve.
