The Yankees have claimed outfielder Russ Canzler off waivers from the Cleveland Indians, potentially filling one of their remaining needs. A right-handed hitter, Canzler could contend for a spot as a backup outfielder or a right-handed hitting DH, a job held last year by the departed Andruw Jones.

Canzler, 26, has appeared in just 29 major-league games, 26 of them last season for Cleveland. He batted .269 last season with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 95 plate appearances, and split time between left field (11 games) and first base (8 games). Previously, he had played in three games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011.
