Yankees GM Brian Cashman showed up at Thursday night's Safe at Home dinner, the anti-domestic abuse foundation established by Joe Torre, in clear violation of team policy. He was sporting a full goatee, expressly forbidden since George Steinbrenner bought the team back in 1973. But Cashman insisted the facial hair was not a disguise to conceal his identity from Yankee fans who think he didn't do enough to improve the team this winter.

"It's my ski goatee," Cashman said. "It comes up every January before I hit the mountain."

Would he get rid of it before reporting to Tampa for spring training next month? "Probably," he said. "I did last year."

But while he might be minus a few more hairs by the start of camp, the GM still hopes to be adding a part or two to his roster, which right now lacks a right-handed hitting outfielder and a full-time DH. "I’m in the marketplace, both free agent and trade, and I’ll stay that way with available players," he said. "I'm hoping for it, but clearly everything that has taken place so far either we’ve passed on or they passed on us, so we just keep working at it and see where it takes us."

Cashman acknowledged that he is hampered somewhat by the $189 million payroll limit for 2014 imposed by Hal Steinbrenner, but maintained he still had "some flexibility if the right player comes along."

Asked if their was a player out there who fit that definition, he said. "No. Not that I know of. You know of anyone?"
