Prior to the Yankees' home opener, Brian Cashman said he spoke with ESPN baseball analyst Rick Sutcliffe. When Sutcliffe asked about CC Sabathia, Cashman told Sutcliffe, Sabathia's velocity isn't there yet. All spring, there was a little something missing on his fastball, Cashman said.

"He is still working on his arm strength," the GM said on Tuesday.

Cashman said that he thinks it might take Sabathia until May to have his fastball right.

"I think that is part of his history," Cashman said. "He usually doesn't have his V-Lo yet."

Cashman said he didn't think Sabathia's elbow cleanup had anything to do with his lack of velocity. There is evidence, though, that Sabathia's pitches were slower than usual for this time of year.

2) JETER THROWING: Derek Jeter took part in physical therapy and a throwing program on Tuesday. Cashman said there is no time-table for his return.

It is clear, though, it won't be soon.

3) PHIL TO TRIPLE-A: Phil Hughes (bulging disk) will start Saturday for Scranton. If he comes out of that start fine, then look for him in a major league game on May 11th. David Phelps will start for the Yankees on Saturday in Detroit.

4) WHAT'S THE DEAL? Cashman on Robinson Cano switching to Jay-Z from Scott Boras and the impact on negotiations.

"I can't predict the future of what this means," Cashman said.
