Youk's pain in the back

TORONTO -- Kevin Youkilis had the biggest Yankees hit over the first five innings of today's game, and then spent the next six innings in the clubhouse, nursing a sore lower back.

Youkilis' two-run single, aided somewhat by third baseman Brett Lawrie's failure to pick up the ball before it sailed past him into leftfield, may have been the hit that really won Saturday's game for the Yankees, because without it, David Robertson's eighth-inning implosion might very well have resulted in a 3-1 loss.

The Yankees wound up winning, 5-3, on reliever Aaron Loup's two-run throwing error in the 11th, but they also wound up losing Youkilis, at least for Sunday's series finale, with what the third baseman called a result of playing on the "springy" Rogers Centre turf.

"Yesterday it tightened up a little bit and today before the game I knew it was a little tight," Youkilis said. "It just got to the point where it was like, 'You know what? I don’t want to make this anything worse.' Being on this turf, we just decided to make a decision and rest. Sometimes these day games after night games, especially on this turf, it can happen."

Joe Girardi said Youkilis "is probably not a player for me tomorrow," and that Jayson Nix, who played well at third base today, would likely play there tomorrow as well.

"I don’t think it’s anything serious," Girardi said. "That’s the tough part about playing indoors sometimes. The turf grabs at you a little bit."
