With his back still keeping him out of action, Kevin Youkilis could be headed to the disabled list, according to manager Joe Girardi. While Girardi said that Youkilis is improving, he also said that if Youkilis can't start against lefty J.A. Happ on Saturday, then the Yankees may put Youkilis on the DL.
Since Youkilis hasn't played since last Saturday, the Yankees can retroactive his stint on the DL, so he would only miss another week.
Youkilis continues to have tightness in his lower back, but the Yankees don't believe it is a serious injury, so they haven't sent him for an MRI.
"We haven't had anything done," Girardi said. "They don't think it is an issue where he needs a test. Let's keep our fingers crossed."
Still, Girardi said a decision could be made to put Youkilis on the DL on Saturday because the Yankees can only play with a 24-man roster for so long.
"He is better," Girardi said. "He is still not quite there. We'll shoot for [Saturday] and see what happens."
NO CONTRACT TALKS FOR CANO: Robinson Cano said he and the Yankees have not re-started contract talks yet.
SECOND PLACE NIX: Girardi pushed Nix up to second in the lineup because he is hitting the ball well of late. He has seven hits in his last 15 at-bats.
TEX, HITTING IN PLACE: Mark Teixeira (wrist) is doing well, but he is not yet ready to hit off a tee or take soft toss. He is still just taking dry swings.
"Once that happens, it will be pretty quick," Teixeira said.
Teixeria added that they have waited this long so they don't want to rush it now.
