Austin Romine will make his first start behind the plate tonight as the Yankees' backup catcher until Francisco Cervelli returns from a broken right hand. Romine is batting ninth in the lineup and will catch Andy Pettitte, who he has never caught in a big league game -- Romine appeared in nine games as September call-up in 2011, when Pettitte was enjoying his one-year retirement -- but spent some time catching up with him in a bullpen session on Saturday after his arrival from Scranton.

Both Romine and Joe Girardi agreed that Pettitte is the perfect pitcher for Romine to catch in his first major league game in 19 months.

"It’s definitely easy to catch Pettitte," Romine said. "He knows what he’s doing with the ball, he knows how to call his own game, but I still take a lot of pride in knowing how to pitch the guys. I’ve been going over the reports and the team. I want to be ready for any situation that gets thrown at me."

"Andy is pretty good about taking other players under his wing and letting them know what he wants to do," Girardi said. "He's not going to get flustered out there if they don't get in a rhythm right away. I think for that it works pretty well."

When asked if he would call pitches from the dugout tonight, Girardi said, "Absolutely not."

But when asked if Pettitte, who seemed displeased with the pitch selection during last Wednesday's 3-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, would be calling the pitches, the manager did not say no. "They're going to have a plan, they're going to go over the plan together just like we do every day," he said. "I'll let them handle it."
