The Yankees played their worst game of the young season tonight, losing 9-1 to the lowly Houston Astros, and Andy Pettitte pitched his worst game in years.

But there were a couple of (minor) positives:

• LHP Vidal Nuno, making his major-league debut, threw three scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Nuno is here for long relief, taking the place of David Phelps, who was moved up to the starting rotation when Ivan Nova went on the DL with triceps inflammation.

Brett Gardner went 2-for-4 and scored the Yankees' only run on Vernon Wells' RBI single in the sixth. It was also the 500th game of Gardner's big-league career.

• Wells' RBI single gave him 13 ribbies for the season, third on the team behind Robbie Cano (17) and Travis Hafner (14).

• Now, one more negative: The Yankees had baserunners in three of the first four innings, but all three were erased in double plays courtesy of Houston starter Lucas Harrell's sinker. And even Harrell's replacement, Travis Blackley, got into the act, getting Gardner to rap into an inning-ending double play immediately upon entering the game in the seventh inning. The four DPs was the most the Yankees have hit into in one game since April 15, 2011, vs. Texas, when they hit into six.
