NEW YORK -- The Bronx is Vernon again.

WHAT IT MEANS: Vernon Wells, who came in hitless in his past 11 at-bats and in an extended 9-for-87 slump, delivered a go-ahead, pinch-hit, bases-clearing double with two outs in the seventh inning, propelling the Yankees to a 7-5 victory over the Rays on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are 24-0 this season when scoring five or more runs in a game.

CC I CAN BEAT THE RAYS: CC Sabathia gave up two home runs -- including Wil Myers' first-career homer, a two-out grand slam in the sixth -- but still managed to improve to 4-10 in his career against the Rays. Sabathia’s final line: 7 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO.

ZO COOL: Zoilo Almonte has made quite a name for himself in the past two days. A day after going 3-for-4 and hitting his first MLB homer, the rookie left fielder reached base three times and had three RBIs. Almonte delivered a two-run single with two outs in the third and drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.

LONGO: Evan Longoria continues to kill the Yankees. The third baseman drilled his third homer of the series -- a solo shot off Sabathia to straightaway center -- leading off the second. He also doubled and was intentionally walked prior to Myers’ blast.

ON-BASE MACHINE: Robinson Cano walked a career-high four times and also singled.

FREE PASS: David Adams drew his first career walk in his 87th plate appearance.

ENTER SANDMAN: Mariano Rivera recorded his 26th save of the season in 27 opportunities.

UP NEXT: Old-Timers’ Day on Sunday. Ivan Nova (2-1, 5.16 ERA) vs. Chris Archer (1-3, 5.03). First pitch, 2:05 p.m.
