A-Rod still expected Monday or Tuesday

BOSTON -- The big news of the day is that Derek Jeter is back on the DL. But as always with the Yankees there are other injury nuggets, beginning with Alex Rodriguez. Yankees GM Brian Cashman reiterated that if all goes well in Scranton this weekend, A-Rod will be in the Yankees lineup against the Rangers either Monday or Tuesday.

"If everything goes right, he flies in from Scranton to Texas," Cashman said. "The level of things that can happen would be: If he is healthy, he is in the lineup, playing third base Monday. That's our hope.

"He is in the lineup DHing Monday. That's the second choice. He is tired from playing the number of days in a row, plus DH on Sunday in Scranton. Between the flight and everything else, he says, 'Listen, can we push this until Tuesday.' We return him from rehab on Tuesday.

"The only way that is not going to happen [that he doesn't play] is in his communication, being honest to us on how he is feeling, we have to make some adjustments."

If that were to happen, Rodriguez would remain on the disabled list, which, barring a setback the next three days, seems unlikely. Rodriguez, soon-to-be age 38, is trying to return from a second hip surgery.

BOESCH RELEASED: The Yankees unconditionally released Brennan Boesch to make room for Brent Lillibridge on the roster. Boesch hurt his shoulder at Triple-A.

INJURY UPDATE: Curtis Granderson (fractured hand) has been taking BP since Tuesday. Cashman thinks first week of August Granderson could be back with the big club. ... David Phelps (right forearm strain) will make a rehab start on Tuesday. Cashman did not know if Phelps will return to the rotation when he is healthy. Ivan Nova may have pitched well enough to keep his spot. .... Jayson Nix (hamstring) will get in a rehab in the middle of next week.

DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR: Mariano Rivera was still glowing about the All-Star Game, calling it "precious." Asked if he burned some rubber in the Corvette Stingray he won with his MVP, Rivera said he doesn't know where the car is as the present time.
