BOSTON -- Derek Jeter said he doesn't feel his quadriceps injury at all and he believes he could return by Saturday at home against the Tampa Rays.

"Nothing," Jeter said when asked what he feels his injured thigh. "Is there anything better than nothing?"

Jeter was in the batting cage on Sunday, tracking pitches.

Jeter is not yet running, so manager Joe Girardi sounded a bit pessimistic that his veteran shortstop will be able to come back by next weekend.

"I guess anything is possible," Girardi said. "I guess the biggest hurdle that he would have to clear is running. I wouldn't rule it out. I wouldn't say I'm 100 percent sure he will be able to come back [Saturday]."

Jeter thought he might take batting practice where he swings on Monday.

MORE INJURY UPDATES: Curtis Granderson (hand) is taking BP and should be playing in rehab games shortly. ... David Phelps (forearm straing) threw another bullpen and is expected to throw a rehab game this week. ... Francisco Cervelli (hand) is throwing. ... Jayson Nix (hamstring) had six simulated at-bats, but didn't run.
