Is this the week for A-Rod?

There have been indications that embattled Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez will be suspended by Major League Baseball this week for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Rodriguez’s suspension could possibly be for the rest of this season and next season as well. It is also possible that commissioner Bud Selig could seek a lifetime ban on A-Rod for lying to investigators and interfering with their investigation.

Of course, this could prove difficult, as Rodriguez has never been suspended before.

A-Rod, who is out with a quadriceps injury, believes he’s ready to play, but told the Yankees that he’d accept their plan to have him start a rehab assignment Aug. 1.

Rodriguez said that he chose to do a five-day rehab, which could potentially put him back in the lineup by Aug. 6 against the Chicago White Sox.

Either way, there isn’t much trust on either side after the whole doctor fiasco.

Whatever.

Rodriguez may never end up returning this season anyway after MLB -- as expected -- decides to drop the hammer.

UP NOW:
Derek Jeter had quite the return, Phil Hughes was dreadful, Hideki Matsui officially retired as a Yankee and Ownership overruled Brian Cashman on the Alfonso Soriano trade. Plus, several other items on the blog.

ON DECK: The Yankees are off Monday. Then they hit the West Coast, starting with a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, which begins Tuesday. Andy Pettitte (7-8, 4.39 ERA) faces Zack Greinke (8-3, 3.49). First pitch, 10:10 ET.
