BOSTON -- Brett Gardner was back in the Yankees clubhouse tonight, but he is nowhere close to returning to the field.

Gardner, who suffered an injury to his left oblique in his first at-bat Thursday night in Baltimore, arrived at Fenway tonight after being sent back to New York for an MRI which revealed a Grade 1 strain, and judging by his words tonight, is unlikely to see action for at least a week or 10 days at minimum, and possibly not at all over the last 13 games of the regular season.

"I can't run, throw or hit," he said. "It's probably going to be at least a week before I can move around and start doing anything. At least for the next couple days, just let it heal."

Gardner said it even hurts to run, which puts a damper on Joe Girardi's hopes to use him as a pinch-runner down the final stretch. "I'm thinking it's going to bother me doing that too," Gardner said. "I don't think I can start running, really, until it's back to 100 percent, or it'll just get bad again."

"I think you've got to give him a week to see where he's at," Girardi said. "I think he'll be a pinch runner maybe before he can do anything else. He's a long ways from picking up a bat."

In Gardner's absence, Curtis Granderson has been moved back to centerfield and into the leadoff spot in the Yankees batting order.
