Pregame notes: Girardi turns to 'hot' Wells

TORONTO -- Even against the righty Todd Redmond, Joe Girardi chose to start righty Vernon Wells over Ichiro Suzuki.

"I'm just going with the hot hand," Girardi said.

Wells is 3-for-15 on the road trip. He did have the big two-run double during the eighth Wednesday. Ichiro entered 3-for-23 on the trip.

• When the Yankees return home on Friday, they will have some reinforcements in their bullpen. Lefty reliever Boone Logan is expected to be available against the San Francisco Giants, Girardi said.

Logan last pitched on Sept. 6th in Boston. He has a bone spur on his left elbow that will need cleaning up this offseason.

• Utilizing the off-day on Monday, Girardi is expected to go with Hiroki Kuroda, CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova during next week's must-sweep series against Tampa.

• Girardi said that it is unlikely he would use Mariano Rivera for a six-out save, but he will not hesitate to put him in the eighth again.

&bulll; Giardi has been given no indication yet that Alex Rodriguez will be able to play third when the Yankees play at home on Friday.

Brett Gardner (oblique) is not much closer to coming back, but it doesn't sound like he would be available as a pinch-runner until the final weekend in Houston, at the earliest.

• Interesting Rivera fact of the day: Girardi said that he doesn't fully warm-up before he comes in relief, like most guys. Instead, Rivera uses his eight pitches from the game mound as his final warm-up pitches. Other pitchers, Girardi said, are already fully warmed up when they arrive, but use the extra pitches to become accustomed to the mound.

• Pitching matchups vs. the Giants; CC Sabathia (13-13, 4.90) vs. Tim Lincecum (10-13, 4.40); Saturday, Ivan Nova (8-5, 3.36) vs. Ryan Vogelsong (3-5, 5.73); Sunday, Andy Pettitte (10-10, 3.93) vs. Yusmeiro Petit (4-0, 3.08).
