Girardi: If Mo wants to play OF, he can

September, 27, 2013
HOUSTON -- It is Mariano Rivera's retirement party and he can do what he wants to.

Joe Girardi said if Rivera wants to play the outfield during the final weekend of his career, he can do that. If he wants to close, he can do that, too.

“I’ll talk to him every day and see what he wants to do,” Girardi said prior to Friday night’s game against the Astros. “I know he has talked about playing some center field. I know he has some concerns about his leg running out there. That is really up to him. If he wants to do it, he can do it. I’m OK with it.”

Girardi had not spoken with Rivera when he met with the press two hours prior to game time.

“When he tells me what he wants to do, we’ll do it,” Girardi said.

For years, there has always been a folklore around Rivera’s outfield skills with many in the organization believing he might be the best defender on the team. Rivera has talked about wanting to play in the outfield.

"I put in the request way back, a long time ago, and now my knees are not the same," he said on Thursday night. "This is not a game for me. I don't know how you guys are taking it but this is not a game for me. It's something that I respect. We'll see what happens. If I'm OK, if I can do it, I will do it, if not, that's fine with me."
