Joe Girardi told ESPNewYork.com's Ian O'Connor that this offseason, he would check in with Mariano Rivera to make sure he truly wants to remain retired.

It sounds as if Girardi should save his cell minutes.

In a Fox documentary, a scene shows Rivera having lunch with David Ortiz prior to a Yankees-Red Sox game at Fenway in September.

“I can’t wait for the moment when this is over,” Rivera said in Spanish to Ortiz. “I’m ready for it already, brother. I’m ready for it. Mentally and physically, I’m ready for it. There’s no desire anymore.”
