Game 96: Royals @ Yankees

4:03 p.m. Teixeira grounds out to short, and the Yankees lose to the Royals, 7-4. Sergio Mitre gets rocked in his first start replacing the injured Andy Pettitte. Alex Rodriguez goes 1-for-4 with a single, is stranded on deck in the ninth, and will have to wait at least another day for home run No. 600. We'll have more soon, gotta head to the clubhouse.

4:00 p.m. With two outs, Jeter doubles, Granderson walks. Teixeira comes to the plate as the tying run -- and guess who's on deck? Script is almost too good.

3:51 p.m. Another 1-2-3 inning for Moseley, who retired the last 10 batters he faced. Royals closer Joakim Soria -- rumored to be coveted by the Yankees as a set-up man for Mariano Rivera -- coming in to pitch the bottom of the ninth.

3:45 p.m. Moseley still pitching for the Yankees -- it'll go under the radar, but Moseley has done a really nice job in relief of Mitre. So far: 3 2/3 innings, he has allowed just one single and a walk.

3:44 p.m. Nice diving play by Ankiel in left-center to take a hit away from Swisher. We head to the ninth, 7-4 Royals.

3:40 p.m. Swisher pinch-hitting for Thames with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, no one on. Swisher sat out last night's game, and didn't start today, because of a sore left Achilles tendon.

3:31 p.m. A-Rod grounds out to short, and is now 1-for-4 on the day, still looking for No. 600. 7-4 Royals, heading to the eighth.

3:28 p.m. Bottom of the seventh, runner on first, two outs, and here's A-Rod vs. Robinson Tejada.

3:09 p.m. Farnsworth emerges from the bottom of the six unscathed. We head to the seventh.

3:02 p.m. Very loud boos when Farnsworth was introduced to the crowd.

3:01 p.m. Davies is removed with one out in the sixth, after walking Posada. Here comes former Yankee Kyle Farnsworth out of the 'pen. This should be interesting. Farnsworth really struggled as a Yankee.

2:56 p.m. "Let It Snow" is playing at Yankee Stadium in between the top and the bottom of the sixth inning -- is this a cruel joke? It's 93 degrees, for cryin' out loud.

2:47 p.m. A-Rod grounds out to second, end of the fifth.

2:46 p.m. For the second at-bat in a row, Teixeira hits a homer in front of A-Rod! Two-run shot, it's now 7-4 Royals.

2:37 p.m. Moseley keeps the game at 7-2, heading to the bottom of the fifth.

2:30 p.m. Jose Guillen absolutely slaughters a baseball into the second deck in left, and Mitre's headed for the showers. It's 7-2, Royals.

2:26 p.m. Posada also goes yard in the bottom of the fourth -- couple of solo shots in the inning bring the Yankees back to 6-2.

2:19 p.m. Home run! But not by A-Rod -- Mark Teixeira hits his 19th of the year. A-Rod follows with an infield single when Betemit can't handle a slow-roller. Yankees beginning the long comeback trail.

2:15 p.m. Mitre got out of the fourth, but not before surrendering yet another run. It's 6-0 Royals. A-Rod due up second in the bottom of the fourth.

2:09 p.m. Mitre getting shelled to start the fourth. Leadoff walk to Alex Gordon, followed by back-to-back-doubles by former Yankee Wilson Betemit and Rick Ankiel. It's 5-0, Royals. Dustin Moseley warming up in the Yankees' bullpen.

2:04 p.m. Yanks stymied by Kyle Davies through three innings. Have managed only two hits off him.

1:56 p.m. Royals now lead 3-0 -- another run that shouldn't have scored. Jason Kendall singles with two outs, then steals second with Mitre ignoring him -- Kendall had such a big jump, he could have practically walked to second base. Then Kendall scores on a single by Billy Butler.

1:45 p.m. Nothing doing for the Yanks in the bottom of the second, other than a Marcus Thames two-out infield single.

1:37 p.m. Mitre settled down in the second, getting three straight groundouts. He's thrown 32 pitches through two innings -- remember, he can throw 90 max today. Let's see if he can keep it up.

1:31 p.m. I've never heard such gasps from a crowd before about a routine fly ball to mid-center field. A-Rod is 0-for-1, folks. Yanks squandered a Curtis Granderson one-out double in the first.

1:22 p.m. Mitre gives up two runs in the first -- both unearned. First run should have been cut off at the plate, Jorge Posada dropped the throw by A-Rod. Second run scored on a sac fly, runner had advanced to third on the Posada error. Mitre didn't look particularly sharp though, in his 21-pitch first inning.

1:09 p.m. Mitre fires Ball 1, and we're under way in the Bronx. It's 89 degrees here, and the temperature will only rise from there.

1:04 p.m. Gave you the Yanks' lineup earlier -- here's the Royals' lineup:

Scott Podsednik, LF

Jason Kendall, C

Billy Butler, 1B

Jose Guillen, RF

Alex Gordon, DH

Wilson Betemit, 3B

Rick Ankiel, CF

Yuniesky Betancourt, SS

Chris Getz, 2B

Kyle Davies, RHP

12:45 p.m. Girardi admitted before Saturday's game that he's managing a little differently with Alex Rodriguez sitting on 599 home runs, one away from 600.

For instance, Girardi admitted he would have pulled A-Rod after the seventh inning on Friday night with the Yankees up 7-0, except for the fact that A-Rod had a decent shot at getting another at-bat in the eighth inning.

Girardi mentioned he might DH Rodriguez on Sunday, but you get the sense that, barring injury, A-Rod won't be getting a day off until he hits home run No. 600.

12:40 p.m. Derek Jeter is DHing today -- that's simply to give him a little extra rest, particularly considering the hot weather.

"You're gonna see me DH some different guys probably in the next few days, just to get through this stretch and the heat," Girardi said.

12:36 p.m. It's going to be a very hot day here at Yankee Stadium -- the temperature is predicted to rise close to 100 degrees.

Sergio Mitre will start in place of the injured Andy Pettitte -- it's Mitre's first appearance since June 4, and his first start since May 16. Mitre is coming back from a strained oblique, and will be limited to 90 pitches, max.

"I would love five innings out of him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Mitre. "And if we get anything more than that, that's a real bonus."

Reliever Jonathan Albaladejo was optioned back to Triple-A Scranton to make room on the roster for Mitre.

11:00 a.m. No Nick Swisher in the lineup again Saturday, but he feels much better and thinks he will play on Sunday. Brett Gardner is also out, he's at the hospital with a bad acid reflux reaction. Click here to read more.

Here is the Yankees' lineup on Saturday:

Derek Jeter, DH

Curtis Granderson, CF

Mark Teixeira, 1B

Alex Rodriguez, 3B

Robinson Cano, 2B

Jorge Posada, C

Marcus Thames, RF

Colin Curtis, LF

Ramiro Pena, SS

Sergio Mitre, RHP
