Cano finished with 150 points -- Cabrera had 385 -- and received no first- or second-place votes and only one third-place vote. Still, it was the third top-five finish for Cano in the past four seasons -- he ran third to winner Josh Hamilton and runner-up Cabrera in 2010. It's one more item on the résumé he will present to prospective buyers as he hits the free-agent market this winter. Cano batted .314 with 27 home runs and 107 RBIs for the Yankees in 2013.
Here are the top 10 finishers in MVP voting (14-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system):
player, club, points
1. Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, 385 points
5. Robinson Cano, Yankees, 150 points
9. Manny Machado, Orioles, 57 points
10. David Ortiz, Red Sox, 47 points
NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano finished fifth in the voting for the American League's Most Valuable Player Award, which was won for the second straight season by Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers.
