Nor' Easter may ground McCann

11/26/2013

NEW YORK -- The Yankees successfully navigated a field of offense-hungry suitors to land catcher Brian McCann this weekend, but getting him to New York to take his physical and introduce him at a news conference is proving to be more difficult, at least before everything shuts down for Thanksgiving.

According to a Yankee source, the club would like to fly McCann in from his Atlanta-area home either today or tomorrow, but forecasts of a severe rain-and-wind storm later this afternoon may well push everything back to next week. The concern is that once McCann arrives here, he will not be able to return home in time to spend the holiday with his family.

The Yankees signed McCann, a career .277 hitter who has averaged 21 HRs and 80 RBI over his eight full big-league seasons, to a five-year, $85 million contract with a vesting option for a sixth year on Saturday. His addition immediately upgrades the offense at catcher, a position from which the Yankees got just 8 HRs, 47 RBI and a .213 batting average from a combination of Chris Stewart, Austin Romine, J.R. Murphy and Francisco Cervelli in 2013.

"The odds are we won't see him (in New York) until next week," said the source.
