TAMPA, Fla. -- Fasten your seat belts. It could be a long game today.
This afternoon's game between the Yankees and Detroit Tigers at The Boss is one of seven Yankees games this season designated for testing of baseball's new instant replay rules, so I would fully expect both managers to try out their new toy a few times today.
Assuming the weather holds out -- it is gray and windy out and the infield is covered as of 10 a.m. -- here is the lineup Joe Girardi is sending out today:
Derek Jeter SS
Russ Canzler 1B
Mason Williams CF
Hiroki Kuroda RHP
No Miguel Cabrera on this trip. Here's the Tigers lineup:
Ian Kinsler 2B
Don Kelly CF
Tyler Collins LF
Trevor Crowe RF
Hernan Perez SS
Anibal Sanchez, RHP
The game is on YES and MLB starting at 1:05 p.m.
Impatient patient: Brendan Ryan is the latest (relatively) new Yankee to be somewhat surprised, for lack of a better term, at the extreme caution with which the team handles injuries. Ryan, who has been down for a week with soreness in his lower back, was bemused when the staff had him take some swings with a broomstick yesterday. He had no idea what the plan was for him today, although he says he is pain-free.
"I love the attention, but there’s no cast, there’s no stitches, no blood, or anything like that," he said, smiling. "I guess they're being careful because it's a back and they were worried it might be an oblique, but it doesn't feel oblique-ish. They just keep telling me to be patient."
